Stop Shrinking Yourself to Fit In. Take Up Space.

In a world that often seems to reward conformity, it’s easy to fall into the trap of shrinking ourselves to fit into predefined molds.

We adjust our opinions, dim our passions, and quiet our voices in an attempt to blend in—to avoid standing out too much.

What if we shift our perspective?

What if taking up space—unapologetically, authentically—is not just acceptable, but necessary for personal growth and progress in the world that we live in?

From a young age, we’re taught to be polite, to not make a scene, to follow the rules. These lessons are valuable in many respects, but they can also cultivate a fear of being TOO MUCH, or different from the ‘norm’.

As we grow older, this fear can evolve into a tendency to shrink ourselves to fit into the spaces society has carved out for us.

In the workplace, it might mean not speaking up in meetings for fear of being seen as too assertive.

In social settings, it might mean downplaying our achievements so as not to make others uncomfortable.

In relationships, it might mean sacrificing our own needs and desires to accommodate those of others.

But what is the true cost of shrinking ourselves?

When we constantly bend and contort to fit into spaces not meant for us, we lose sight of who we truly are. We silence our unique perspectives, stifle our creativity, and deny the world the FULLNESS of our potential.

Additionally, the act of shrinking is often accompanied by feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome. We start to believe that we are not worthy of taking up space, that our ideas are not valuable, and that our presence is not welcome.

This self-doubt can be paralyzing, holding us back from pursuing our dreams, making meaningful contributions, and leaving our legacy in the world.

So how do we break free from the cycle of shrinking ourselves?

The answer lies in embracing the act of taking up space.

This does not mean being loud for the sake of being loud or dominating conversations. Instead, it means owning our space with confidence and authenticity.

Taking up space means:

  • Your experiences, opinions, and perspectives are valid. Don’t be afraid to speak your truth, even if it challenges the status quo.
  • It’s okay to say no and establish boundaries that honor your needs and well-being. Respect for yourself sets the standard for how others should treat you.
  • You’ve worked hard for your successes—celebrate your achievements, big or small. Acknowledge them proudly without downplaying your efforts.
  • Lift others up when you see them shrinking. Encourage their voices and validate their experiences.

When we choose to take up space, we create ripples of change around us. By showing up authentically, we give permission for others to do the same. We create diverse, inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and heard.

Imagine a world where everyone feels confident in their worth, celebrates diverse voices, and encourages taking up space. This is a world where innovation thrives, empathy flourishes, and where true progress is possible.

It’s time to stop shrinking ourselves to fit in. Let’s embrace the power of taking up space—boldly, unapologetically, and authentically. By doing so, we not only honor ourselves but also pave the way for a more inclusive and vibrant world.

So go ahead, speak your truth, stand tall, and take up the space that is rightfully yours. The world is waiting for you to be who you were meant to be!
