Love, Family and Cancer: The beautiful love story of taking care of each other, their daughter and herself with Christie Bishop. Part 2

Christie has been in the advertising business for nearly 2 decades, and has worked on some pretty big campaigns; including a Super Bowl spot! In 2009, at just 30 years old, Christie Bishop’s life and career were turned upside down when her then-fiancee, Bryan, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and given just six months to live. Christie’s life went from wedding celebrations and climbing the marketing corporate ladder, to living the devastating realities of cancer caregiving and often feeling isolated from nearly everyone she knew.

At thirty years old, Bryan Bishop’s life was right on track, too. Known to millions as “Bald Bryan,” the sidekick and soundman on the record-setting podcast, The Adam Carolla Show, his radio career was taking off. He was newly engaged. Then, he and his fiancée Christie were delivered a crushing blow when he was diagnosed with a brain stem glioma—an inoperable brain tumor.

Suddenly Bryan’s promising future was transformed into a grueling schedule of radiation and chemotherapy while facing his mortality. But through various treatments, Bryan has survived. He also wrote a book called Shrinkage: Manhood, Marriage, and the Tumor That Tried to Kill Me, a look at his journey of resilience. The author celebrates how treatment shrunk his tumor and gave him a new lease on life.

Christie joins Sara 14 years later and talks about the then prognosis of a very short window of life, and how 14 years later they are here, very much in love, and sharing their journey… a journey that is not over. Christie gives us a glimpse of their lives now, their past, and a peak at their next challenge, imbued with amazing spirits and hope. She also gets honest about the ups and downs, and how she learned what she needed to do for herself to keep her as the best version of herself. They also talk about the tough times, how they don’t give up, how they work through every challenge, their soulmate love and the love of their family unit with their 6-year-old daughter, and how they love each other so strongly and want to be together as much as they can, enjoying life.

In Part 1 of this interview, Sara talked with both Christie and Bryan. In this episode, Part 2, she talks with just Christie about her ways of living with this ongoing dynamic of Bryan’s health. Most important is Bryan staying alive as more and more research and possibilities unfold.

This is an empowering and inspiring conversation. Grab your journals and something to write with, and let’s dive in!
