Just Keep Swimming: USC Water Polo Team goes to the Grand Canyon
Sara’s son is co-captain of the USC Men’s Water Polo Team. The coach asked Sara to lead an adventure for the team into the Grand Canyon, as a mom who knows how to do it.
This episode talks about the experience with her son’s team, and how the team members did on rugged land vs. the familiar swimming pool.
It’s a wonderful journey into teams, individuals, support, going the distance, and the help of a remarkable leader who knew when the very tired team needed some soup with much-needed salt, which they termed “magic soup”. (It was Lipton basic soup!)
Then with new wind in their sails, they carried on with some renewed energy. But Sara saw quite a few of them lose trust that they could finish, and feel like they couldn’t make it any further, but she witnessed amazing support for one another. They used their water polo team encouragement and helped each other get to the finish line.
As one of them said, “Just keep swimming!” which is the perfect metaphor for life, whether on the Grand Canyon climb, the sports team, or whatever you may be going through.
And when things get tough, as Sara told the team “break it down into small steps”, call on resilience and problem-solving, and remember to feed yourself: food, water, or encouraging words.
