Friendships: When do you know Enough is Enough?

In this episode, Sara talks about our friendships- how they morph and change, how some friends are for a certain time frame, and how as you change (or they change) sometimes the friendship isn’t working. Sara asks, “Are you happy? Take a look at the people around you.”

She also shares Joe’s quote with us: “Be the partner that you want.” Also, as Sara says, “Be the best friend to yourself first.”

Sometimes you have that friend that you’ve loved but suddenly you are more aware of how much chaos surrounds them and your friendship. Maybe you have gotten to a place where that isn’t making you happy- maybe even making you anxious.

It’s hard to break off a friendship that’s meant a lot to you over time- but as Sara says, “Sometimes you have to think of yourself first.” When you become aware of toxicity and negativity, it’s time to move on. She acknowledges that her friend group has gotten smaller, but she’s gotten happier.

Here are some of her non-negotiables in staying or being friends with someone:

  1. Do not accept gossip. If your friend is gossiping to you about others, you can be sure they are gossiping about you, too.
  2. Will not be friends with someone who is friends with your enemies. It’s fine if they want to be friends with that person, but you don’t have to stay friends with them. It probably says something about them. Sara says she will always be kind to people, but not good friends.
  3. Watch how your friends treat others, and how they let others treat them. They need to be kind and respectful to others. These are basic qualities that your best friends need to have.

Navigating friendships comes with ups and downs for sure, but when the relationship is no longer working for you, do not feel guilty when you need to break it off. You will be happier.
