Run Like Hell from Trauma Bonds with Dr. Nadine Macaluso and Sara

Change your present and seize your exceptional future by escaping your painful trauma bond. That’s what Dr. Nae (Nadine Macaluso) did. Her new book, Run Like Hell: A Therapist’s Guide To Recognizing, Escaping, And Healing From Trauma Bonds recounts her story and is out now.

At 22, Nadine married Jordan Belfort, infamously known as the Wolf of Wall Street. Their eight-year marriage began as a fairytale, filled with expensive gifts and lavish parties. But once they were bonded, Jordan’s ‘mask’ began to slip and acts of control, infidelity, narcissistic abuse, insatiable greed, and uncontrollable drug addiction became Nadine’s nightmare. Nadine believed that her love could save him, so she remained trauma-bonded until the pain of their relationship became too much to bear.

She left Belfort and was inspired to become a psychotherapist. It would be decades before she realized her story resembled thousands of other women’s relational experiences. She now specializes in narcissistic abuse, trauma bonds, and complex PTSD, and serves many women in the all-too-familiar stories of abuse with a pathological partner.

In this episode, Sara and Nadine talk about some of their similar experiences, what Nadine went through, and the symptoms of intermittent abuse, power imbalance, and fear that actually trauma bond you more to the person. They also want to be sure women do not take on the stereotypical labels of Learned Helplessness and other terms that seem to put “blame” on women.
