Resilience = Freedom
Read time: ~4 Minutes
Have you ever thought of resilience as something that forges freedom?
When we think of July in the United States, we often picture flags, fireworks, and fanfare. But let’s be honest: Freedom is more than a holiday.
It’s a way of working. A way of leading. A way of living.
In the workplace, real freedom is forged by resilience. This is our ability to stay grounded, navigate challenges, and lead from within. When we forge resilience and work through our mental and emotional crises, our burnout and difficulties, we still have enough left in the tank to grow within the frontline, as leaders, and as an organization.
Years ago, I had a boss who tried micromanaging her teams. She chipped away at everything that we had worked so hard to create. We lost our freedom in our ability to work. Many of us became unhappy in our positions. We eventually lost morale, and ultimately, many employees left their positions.
She didn’t believe in creating resilience. Her leadership created chaos.
Does this resonate with you? (Drop it in the comments if it does.)
It’s horrifying when we lose freedom within our careers, jobs, and roles that we love.
When losing our freedom, we lose our love for what brought us there in the first place. We lose who we are in our work.
Many times we begin:
- Seeking permission before speaking up.
- Saying yes when we mean no.
- Staying quiet to keep the peace.
- We over-function, over-deliver, and under-rest. We burn out.
We need leadership that understands the importance of resilience.
Resilient, impactful leadership asks us to choose practices that build freedom from burnout, freedom from people-pleasing, and freedom from performative leadership.
Because resilience = freedom.
Freedom in the workplace sounds like:
- Leading from our values, not just our job title
- Saying “no” when our energy is depleted
- Letting go of roles or expectations that no longer serve
- Giving permission to own our voice
If your work feels like a performance, you’re not free.
And if your leadership is shaped more by pressure than by purpose, you’re not leading from resilience.
So here’s a mid-year challenge. Sit with this question:
What does freedom look like in my professional life right now?
Here are some journal prompts to get you started.
- Where do I feel most free in my work right now?
- What situations feel most constrained or heavy?
- What would a daily freedom practice look like in my role or team?
You don’t need a long weekend to reclaim your power.
You need boundaries. And you need to remember: Resilience fosters freedom.
